Landing at Bay Point

in Coos Bay, Oregon

Can a place to stay be a destination all on its own? The trip itself, instead of just the place to lay your head?

My usual position has always been that this isn’t how I like to travel or even how one should travel. But a recent short stay at Bay Point Landing near Coos Bay on Oregon’s South Coast has me wondering if there can be exceptions to that rule.

I want to return for a longer stay, to soak in a design that seeks to minimize the environmental impact on land that was once home to Siuslaw and Siletz people [source].

The heated salt water pool in its wooden-roofed enclosure, the bacon and egg breakfast sandwiches from the on-site food truck, the whisky s’mores kit, the quality mattress and solid water pressure of a shower accompanied by Beekman 1802 bath products,

the serenity of dawn with only the sounds of sea and bird for company, the marine fog on the pines across the water...

are calling my name.

Bay Point's look and feel

is a result of the work of OFFICEUNTITLED and principal architect Christian Robert. I chuckle as I write this, a short drive from their Culver City office. That LA people could design so successfully in Oregon. That an LA photographer could find the escape she was longing for in Oregon. That the world is smaller than it sometimes seems. That we are more connected than we know. But that’s another story for another day…

Archello shares in 'Sanctuary by the Sea' some of the history of the site and waxes poetic about the design, saying

“the camps were organized to recall a natural riparian past…”

Several different styles of cabin accommodation are available, as are spaces to park your RV and a collection of refurbished Airstreams to stay in. Two of the styles are known as Kamp Haus Cabin and the Drift Cabin. One has a gabled roof, while the other is flat-topped. Both are clad in distressed timber. It’s all scattered over 103 acres of land right on the inlet with a mile of secluded beachfront and dense forest that makes it feel removed from Coos Bay and North Bend.

Like a summer camp for grownups. A retreat from the world. Luxury glamping.

This was my cabin, # 117, with an open living/dining room and kitchenette, along with a bedroom, full bathroom, Beekman 1802 bath products, locally-roasted coffee, and artisan mini bar full of Oregon products.

They have a brand new, larger cabin style that has just premiered.

The outside mimics trendy container homes. [image source]

Timber Haus is their largest style and features skylights with the most spacious kitchen and dining area. It sleeps four with a loft space that has two beds above the main bedroom.

In the morning before most guests wake up, the chorus of birds is a symphony for the plucky early riser. Using my Merlin bird app from The Cornell Lab of Ornithology, I discovered I could hear Robin, White-crowned Sparrow, European Starling, Glaucous-winged Gull, Song Sparrow, Killdeer and Western Gull.

Can pick out their individual sounds in the audio clip above or in this video?

Bay Point is a place that encourages you to make that morning coffee yourself in the tidy kitchen complete with glass pour-over carafe. You should enjoy it at a leisurely pace while sitting outside your cabin at your own picnic table or Adirondack chair.

Oh and that breakfast sammie? Is so good!! Snag it from their food truck. It's open Friday and Saturday from 3-8pm and on Sunday, when they do brunch, from 8-11am.

At night, you should enjoy whisky s’mores from the canteen with friends at your cabin’s fire pit.

🔥 🥃 🍫 We did it so I can tell you that they were the best s’mores I have ever had! 😋

Plan to walk your dog right at that time like this couple did. Then enjoy dinner after.

Bay Point is that place that endeavors to think of everything so you don’t have to.

  • fully-stocked canteen located where you check in and offering free delivery to wherever you’re staying onsite via QR code
  • ready-to-go bonfire kits placed right by the door of your cabin in a handy bucket
  • tools for clamming at the beach
  • grills available by request
  • a game / TV room. Part of the spacious, year-round clubhouse that is lifted above the ground via a series of piers.

You can even have Bay Point create a private dinner to celebrate a special event. A professional chef’s kitchen is married to a spacious dining room, and elevated porch, that looks over the inlet.

We experienced the space with Chef Eoghain O’Neill & his wife Kariktan of nearby Restaurant O. His time with celebrity chefs like Anthony Bourdain and Gordon Ramsay is apparent but he is as down to earth and funny as he is talented.

The meal was more than worth the miles we traveled to be there and the miniature morels on the beef were a revelation. His Oregon drink pairings, from CBD beverages to start, followed by cider and wine, were also exceptional.

and after Bay Point has taken care of all your needs,

all that will be left for you to do: is fail to make any plans that aren’t focused on relaxation or fun.
