Charming German Towns

of Franconia

Kirsten Alana
By Kirsten Alana

Germany Tourism invited me to visit Franconia, a wine region within greater Bavaria, as a journalist. I gladly accepted since I adore German wines. What I didn't expect was how much I would love not just the wine but also the area itself. Almost every town is charming and picturesque with a storybook feel that, as someone raised in the USA, is just something I can't get at home.

Visit castle-turned-museum/gallery on the hill and have lunch at the bier hall in Zum Riesen.

In Volkach, make sure not to miss lunch at Zur Schwane or the small plates and wine pairings at Fahr Away which also offers bottles for sale.

Iphofen is a wonderful option for tasting or buying wine with several wineries right in town and a cooperative shop that sells bottles from all over the region close to the Town Hall.

Königsberg

Königsberg, just like Miltenberg, has a castle on the hill overlooking town, perfectly befitting a storybook town. It was an exclave of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha until 1918.

If you can’t tell by the number of photos I took, this was my favorite town. It is also the one we spent the most amount of time just walking around in, which is helpful for a photographer!

Keep an eye on my blog for more detailed information on traveling to Franconia. All images created with the Sony RX1 RII a terrific, compact travel camera. My trip was hosted by Germany Tourism. All images and opinions are my own.
